Katie Courie interviews Barack Obama and John McCain on the bailout

September 25, 2008CBS NEWS ANCHOR KATIE COURIC INTERVIEWS PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEES BARACK OBAMA AND JOHN MCCAIN ON TONIGHT’S “CBS EVENING NEWS”Following is the transcript from Katie Couric’s interviews with Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain on the financial bail out plan, which was broadcast tonight (25) on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC. DATE September 25, 2008 TIME 6:30-7:00 PM NETWORK CBS PROGRAM CBS Evening NewsInterview: Senators Obama and McCain on the financial bailout plan KATIE COURIC, anchor:Late this afternoon, I talked to Senator Obama about the bailout and his concerns.Senator BARACK OBAMA: Well, it’s not exactly clear. What happened was, when I left Florida, landed, I had heard the news that in fact a deal was there. People are not, obviously, happy that we got here in the first place, and we shouldn’t have gotten here in the first place. You know, it’s a consequence of speculator greed, but also Washington not paying attention and regulators being asleep at the switch. So there’s resistance, but there had been at least some core principles that were met.I think that, from the Democratic perspective, we just want to make sure that this is helping the small business man make his payroll, people keeping their money market accounts, that we don’t see a cratering of the credit markets that could end up leading to enormous job loss. And obviously, it’s pretty frustrating for Democrats, having seen the mismanagement that’s been taking place over the last several years, to feel like we’ve got to step in and get something done. But that’s how I think many of us feel, that we can’t worry about how we got here; now we’ve got to take some serious steps.COURIC: You originally seemed to dismiss the idea of coming to Washington as showmanship, saying it wasn’t really necessary to inject presidential politics into this process. Have you changed your mind? Do you think it was worth your time coming to Washington?Sen. OBAMA: It’s important not to inject presidential politics into this. My preference is to use the phone and to talk to people and to work with them, including Secretary Paulson, Chairman Bernanke and others, in a way that’s not a photo op. Because I think sometimes that prevents things from getting done. It’s amazing what you can get done when you’re not looking to try to get credit for it.COURIC: Meanwhile, John McCain was also on Capitol Hill today, suspending his campaign so he could be part of the negotiations. We also spoke late this afternoon.Senator McCain, what is the most serious concern that’s been expressed about this bailout plan?Senator JOHN McCAIN: We’re talking about the biggest event of this kind in history. There’s concerns about home ownership, keeping people in their homes. There’s some concerns about whether insurance should also be some kinds of options there. There’s concerns about restrictions on CEO pay.COURIC: Is one of the major sticking points, senator, how you’re going to pay for this thing, whether it’s going to be through taxpayer dollars or private investors?Sen. McCAIN: People realize in the Congress what’s at stake here: people’s jobs, small businesses, their homes. And we have to explain that this affects Main Street, not just Wall Street.COURIC: If you can’t get members of your own party to fall in line, if you will, Senator McCain, will John McCain the maverick emerge, and will you buck members of your party?Sen. McCAIN: Well, I’m sorry to–I need not remind you, Katie, I have taken on members of my party and the leadership of my party on numerous occasions. But in this case, I am confident that we will reach a agreement that gets a majority of my colleagues on my side of the aisle, as well as a majority on the other side.COURIC: Tomorrow…Sen. McCAIN: Mm-hmm.COURIC: …in Oxford, Mississippi, the first presidential debate is scheduled to take place. The commission is going forward. Will you be there, or can you just not say at this point?Sen. McCAIN: I understand how important this debate is, and I’m very hopeful. But I also have to put the country first.COURIC: Senator John McCain. Senator, thank you for your time.Sen. McCAIN: Thank you, Katie.

Tony Alamo talks about the raid of his Arkansas compound

I’m always skeptical when people refer to fringe religious groups as “cults.” You know, Christianity was a heretical Jewish cult in the first century, and look how that turned out.

The word cult was thrown around in Sunday papers this weekend following the raid of Tony Alamo Ministries, and again, I chose against using the word. The guy certainly seemed odd, and allegations of a child pornography ring at his religious compound didn’t help. But those were allegations, and Fouke, Ark., wasn’t Jonestown or Rancho Santa Fe.

I’m still not ready to call Alamo a cult leader, but I am willing to say he is absolutely bonkers, at least theologically. Last night he did exactly what no person in trouble should do: He opened his mouth, and to a reporter no less. And, boy, he’s got some wild ideas.

An excerpt of the blog post from John C. Williams at the Arkansas Times, who interview Alamo, is after the jump:

Not surprisingly, Alamo categorically denied charges of child pornography and polygamy that have been reported in the past few days. â?Anybody can accuse and spread it around town, and of course they want to kill you,❠he said of the allegations. â?But thereâs no child abuse going on.â

Itâs not that polygamy is wrong, he said: â?If you can find anything in the Bible about fire and brimstone for the practice of polygamy, then Iâll give you $250,000 in cash. Adultery is condemned, but not polygamy.â

Southern maryland news

â?Most of the world believes in polygamy,❠Alamo said. â?The Africans, the Indians, the Chinese. The Jews â” the Jews can have at least four wives. Two-thirds of people in the world practice polygamy.â

He added that polygamy is not for everyone â” just for â?great men of God, if they can take care of their wives and children.❠He also repeated his typical complaint that if school-age girls can âfornicateâ and use birth control, then thereâs no reason it should be illegal for men to take young wives.

Yet Alamo denied that he had wives of any age, other reports to the contrary: â?You can check all the marriage records in the world.❠He said his only two wives have been Susan Alamo and â?the princess of Sweden,❠Birgitta Gyllenhammar, who left him and the church after two years.

He also denied that anyone in his church was practicing polygamy or marrying underage girls. â?I donât believe that at all. Otherwise I would kick them out. And they donât want to be kicked out.â

Alamo blamed a Fouke man named Tony Lane for the raid. He claimed Laneâs wife lived at the complex and that he wanted her to leave against her will. He accused Lane of being an alcoholic and a bad guy in general, though he admitted that he had never met him. Alamo added that a number of Fouke residents â” whom he referred to as âhillbilliesâ â” were being paid off by the government to give information about the complex. He claimed Fouke to be a main base for the KKK.

Itâs never been totally clear why Alamo chose the Miller County town of 800 for his headquarters after his release from prison for tax evasion in 1998. The answer is simple, Alamo said: Convenience. His followers were visiting him in the Texarkana federal pen, he said, so it made sense for them to set up shop nearby. â?They didnât want to stay in hotels.â

There’s more here.

Then Bush got less than 10 seconds of polite applause at the end of a speech in which he urged world leaders to take “an unequivocal moral stand” against suicide bombings, hostage taking and other terror tactics.

Bush and Gang Prepares to Unleash Hell on Iran.
It was a decidedly low-key appearance, rehashing familiar themes, devoid of the passion Bush displayed in the early years of his presidency when he summoned the world after Sept. 11, 2001, to a battle against terrorism and tried — but failed — to win U.N. backing for the war in Iraq.

Bush’s Iraq Plan: Goading Iran Into War AlterNet
… gluttony (better known as SUVs) giving us thumbs ups and I just felt resentment. … Perhaps the time will come–after Bush gives the orders to attack Iran. …

The president, humbled by economic turmoil that has darkened the final days of his presidency, also tried to speak reassuringly to the leaders about the financial upheaval on Wall Street that has forced him to set aside core principles of capitalism and authorize government takeovers of failing companies.

Intelligence: Iran Archives
But many analysts say it is Iran’s atomic intransigence that has now prodded the … Bush of using events in Iraq as an excuse to plan military action against Iran. …

“I can assure you that my administration and our Congress are working together to quickly pass legislation approving this strategy,” Bush told the General Assembly. “And I’m confident we will act in the urgent time frame required.” Bush scrapped a planned political trip to Florida on Wednesday to return directly to Washington.

Bush’s 22-minute address in the packed, 2,000-seat hall was mostly a restatement of his previous condemnations of terror, calls to advance democracy and criticism of the United Nations for “inefficiency and corruption” and “bloated bureaucracies.” Still, Bush said the U.N. and other multinational organizations are now “needed more urgently than ever” to combat terrorists and extremists who are threatening world order.
